Field Trip to Connecticut
"The Source of Long
Island’s Boulders?"
Gilbert N. Hanson and Waldemar Pacholik Wednesday June 27, 2001 Meet in the large ESS Parking lot at SUNY Stony Brook. We will leave promptly at 7:15 a.m. to catch the 8:00 a.m. Ferry in Port Jefferson to Bridgeport. There are no places to legally park for the day in Port Jefferson. In or near Bridgeport we will see the Ordovician Pumpkin Ground and Beardsley gneiss members of the Harrison Gneiss, the Devonian Ansonia Granite, the Jurassic Buttress Dolerite, and the Permian Pinewood Adamellite. We will then travel to see outcrops of Triassic fluvial sands and muds in the Hartford Basin. At the end of the trip we will see outcrops of the late Proterozoic Branford Gneiss. Most of the rock types that we will see on the field trip have their equivalents in boulders and cobbles found in the Stony Brook Moraine on Long Island. We will catch the 4:30 p.m. ferry from Bridgeport returning to Port Jefferson by 6:00 p.m. (If traffic conditions do not interfere.) The field trip is limited to 12 participants. Photos of some of the rock types to be seen are at this link. We
will go rain or shine. There will be no refunds. Bring lunch and
drink. DIRECTIONS
